In the early 1990s, a large number of architectural plans, designs, and drawings by William Bernhard were donated to the Ephraim Historical Foundation (EHF). Bernhard was a Russian-born, German-trained architect who was active in the Chicago area and in Door County from the 1920s into the 1940s. He designed numerous buildings in the Village of Ephraim and beyond, including his own Ephraim residence “Svea” (1920), the Ephraim Village Hall (1926), and the Door County Historical Museum (1937). This talk will highlight Bernhard’s story as well as these key structures in his Door County portfolio, leveraging the over 200 examples of Bernhard’s work in the EHF Archives.
